During 1939 and the start of 1940 hardly any bombs were dropped on Britain. But Hitler planned to invade Britain. In September 1940 the German's started to bomb Britain's cities instead of RAF air bases hoping that Britons would panic and surrender. This period was known as The Blitz. As soon as the aircraft were spotted in the night sky, air raid sirens sounded to warn everyone that an air raid was coming. Some families would run down to a communal brick or concrete shelter in their street. Others sheltered from the bombs at home in their cellars or underneath a table or the stairs. Families with shelters in their gardens could hide in there. These were usually damp and dark and made from corrugated iron. they were known as Anderson shelters. In London they could shelter in the underground railway stations. At first this was very uncomfortable but as time went on bunk beds, toilets and snacks were provided. These stations were not totally safe in January 1941, a bomb fell above Bank underground station killing over 100 people who were sheltering below. Each street had an Air Raid Warden. Their job was to send for fire engines and ambulances, and to check for casualties or unexploded bombs.

The blackout began two days before the war began. Under blackout rules, everyone had to cover up their windows at night with black material. This was to make it difficult for german bombers to find their target in the dark. The street lamps were turned off and often people bumped into one another. Traffic accidents were common because car headlights had to be blacked out, and deaths from drowning increased as people fell off bridges or walked into ponds.

The Ford Motor Factory began its illustrious history in October 1941, as the first Ford vehicle assembly plant in Southeast Asia. Situated in a location close to the Malayan railway line, it allowed for transportation of goods to and from the docks at Tanjong Pagar. Its close proximity to Bukit Timah Road, the main road linking Singapore to Malaya, and ultimately to the rest of mainland Southeast Asia, also provided an alternate transport route.
During the Malayan Campaign, the Factory’s modern assembly equipment was used by the Royal Air Force to assemble fighter planes. The planes came in parts that were shipped to Singapore in crates. However, most of these aircraft never fulfilled their destiny of defending Malaya. They were flown out of Singapore towards the end of January 1942, when prospects for Singapore looked bleak.
The Ford Motor Factory most notably served as the venue for the formal surrender of Malaya by the British General Officer Commanding Malaya, Lt.-Gen. Arthur Ernest Percival, to the Japanese Commander of the 25th Army, Gen. Yamashita Tomoyuki.
In the final tense hours before the surrender on 15 February 1942, Yamashita waited at the Factory while Percival and his aides discussed their options at the Battlebox, a bunker at Fort Canning. Percival and his troops then set off on their journey from Fort Canning Hill to the Ford Motor Factory.
The British surrender marked the decline of the British empire in Asia and the beginning of the Japanese Occupation, the darkest period in Singapore’s modern history.
During the Japanese Occupation, the Factory was designated as a butai or Japanese facility. Nissan, which was then a prominent zaibatsu or Japanese multinational company, took over the plant to assemble military trucks and other vehicles for the Japanese occupying forces.
The Ford Motor Factory resumed operations after the war in 1947 and was finally shut down in June 1980. Remains of the Factory were gazetted as a national monument on 15 February 2006.

Singapore is a small country. It has a small population base and no natural resources. It is a multi-racial and multi-religious society, a young country whose roots are still being planted. All these make Singapore vulnerable not only to military attacks, but also to exploitation of our economic, social, political or psychological weaknesses by those who may wish to do us harm.
To ensure that we can deal adequately with these challenges, it is important that Singapore has a Total Defence capability that involves the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), as well as the entire civilian population.
In Total Defence, our people are organised to defend the country against all forms of attack, both military and non-military. Total Defence comprises Psychological Defence, Social Defence, Economic Defence, Civil Defence and Military defence. The concept of Total Defence was first introduced in 1984 to highlight the important role that every Singaporean plays in the defence of Singapore.
Five Aspects of Total Defence
These are pictures of people on Total Defence Day and National Day.
